The food tavern reborn

The Horse and Farrier born in the stake management system in the 1920’s and now reinvented in 2024.

Founded in the 1920s to address rampant drinking in wartime Carlisle, The Horse and Farrier was part of a revolutionary effort led by David Lloyd George to nationalize public houses and promote responsible drinking. Architect Harry Redfern designed it to embody this shift, emphasizing food sales to encourage moderation.

Today, The Horse and Farrier is a lively food tavern that celebrates local produce and culinary innovation while honoring its historical roots. It remains a community hub, blending its rich past with a commitment to quality dining and responsible drinking.
